Angela' s Background
Angela Lorenz has lived in Bologna Italy starting in 1989 and works now from Berlin and Vienna, but was born near Boston Ma 1965. She journeyed to Italy to attend the University of Bologna, and has become one of the most highly regarded graphic designers for “laptop music”. This sort of music consists of pop, clicking and pulsating micro sounds that create an electronic feel with digital rhythm.
She has created for record covers and posters for electronic music artists, as well as live visuals to entertain fans at music concerts album. Although she has been quoted for saying “I’m as musical as a brick”, she believes music and graphic artists are very similar in their creative processes. In her case, her art is like the electronic music because the end result gives the feel of something that was not created by a human. The designs appear as random, yet are deliberate because of her fascination with playing with shapes and dots on the computer.
Her design style, often referred to as digital minimalism, is quite simple, but the lack of detail is still classy and sophisticated. The screen based project she worked on for lowercasesound.com is one of the best examples to show case the merge of contingency and precise design. Lower case sound is defined as a softer genre of music like the hum of a kitchen appliance or car engine. Another is her series of Album covers for Full Swing, although these designs lean more towards abstraction and pattern. She also creates from political point of view and has many great influences in this area, among them Plazm Design of Portland Oregon for their forum of anti-war visuals.
-“Im really uninterested in classical images…I find making skies bluer and teeth whiter to appear more real boring…in the end, the real thing is dots of ink on paper.”- Angela Lorenz.
